F1 - glass etching area is black

I'm trying to etch some drinking glasses and using spray paint to coat the glass based on some google results.  The issue I have is twofold - first, the etched area is black, almost like the paint has been burnt into the area, so what could I use that doesn't leave the colour?  Second, again with the paint, I have to use paint thinner to remove it, so I want something that is easier to clean up.  Hopefully the solution(s) will help with both issues.

Photo shows etched mickey ears I cleaned off with paint thinner.  Etched area is black (note, I tried a lighter coloured paint and the etched area still comes out black.)

TIA!
