Trace question

Hello all, so is there a trick when doing a trace to not getting the entire background? There are many times that I am unable to simply edit out the background like when the background is black, the problem is I don't want the entire boarder of the background included in the trace. Is there any tricks to getting around this? I really wish you had the ability to edit a trace, being able to use an eraser function on a trace would be nice. Any help is greatly appreciated.
