I've looked for an article on the features related to lowering the focus, but could find one. Is there one?

Can anyone precisely explain the settings:
“pass” Is this how many times to run the cut ("passes") or which pass are we processing (pass 3, with an appropriately lowered focus?

“single step descent” and “Focus desc: 3”  I get that this lowers the focus (so I assume cutting means we should lower the focus, even for a single pass).

“stepwise descent features”. I thought this might mean run multiple cut passes, lower the focus each time. But with:
- Initial focus: 3
- Descent interval: 1 or 3
- Focus desc: 3
… just a single pass is run.  Does this interact with the “pass” setting?
Is "Descent interval" how much to drop the focus on each pass? What the difference with “Focus desc”?
I'm honestly confused and couldn't find documentation when I looked.
